i'm trying to get a hover effect when mousing over the left button on my topbar, but for some reason nothing happens, and i can't figure out why for the life of me.

my stylesheet:
.topbarmain {
 width: 100%;
 height: 45px;
 background-color: #202322;
 position: fixed;
 z-index: 99;
 margin-top: -90px;

.topbarnav {
 width: 45px;
 height: 32px;
 border-right: 1px solid rgba(227,227,227,.2);
 color: rgba(227,227,227,.9);
 font-size: 15px;
 float: left;
 padding-top: 13px;

.topbardropdown {
 width: 100%;
 height: 0px;
 background-color: #222;
 position: relative;
 top: 42px;
 position: fixed;
 transition-duration: 1s;

.topbarnav:hover .topbardropdown {
 height: 120px;
 transition-duration: 1s;

my wrapper:
<div class="topbarmain">
<div class="topbarnav"><i class="fa fa-bars" aria-hidden="true"></i></div>
<div class="topbardropdown"></div>

i've been looking around trying to figure out how to make a fixed sidebar right-aligned to fit all screens, but so far i've found nothing. perhaps i'm just looking in the wrong places. would anyone care to explain how to go about doing it? i have the board and the sidebar wrapped in a div with 100% width, the board being float: left; and the sidebar being float: right; and that seems to be working alright (correct me if i'm wrong lmao), but as soon as i add position: fixed; to the sidebar, it jumps all the way to the left.

i'm currently working on my post row, but i can't get the two table rows (.postleft and .postright) to automatically adjust to the same height. i want the minimum height to be 440px, as specified in .postleft.

template: here

the answer to this is probably simple as hell, but i can't find the solution on google written in a way that i can understand. according to some answers i need javascript to make it happen, but i'd prefer it with html and css only if possible.

is it in any way possible to get the status variable to work in the post rows template? i really want the online/offline status to be shown just below the username.

i've never successfully managed to make a right aligned fixed sidebar, yet here i am giving it another shot lmao.

i tried making it work by doing float: right; but for some reason the background color isn't showing. then i tried changing the float to float: left; but nothing changed. the text shows up but background color doesn't. anyone know why that is?
if someone happens to have an irresistible urge to teach me how to make a right aligned fixed sidebar that would be great too. then i won't have to ask about that as soon as i solve this problem. who knows, maybe it'll solve itself if i actually do it right.

here's a link to the board:
