|If you ban a parent account, are all the sub-accounts also banned, or do they have to be manually banned as well? Just can't be too sure.|

However, if you also ban the IP of the parent account in question, the sub-accounts (as long as they are on the same IP) will also not have access, regardless of usergroup.

|You need to ban all accounts. Banning the parent does not ban all of their subaccounts. Banning by IP is more direct and will completely lock their access; but if they change IPs then they can post in those unbanned accounts.|

I was honestly going to start a new topic about IP banning, but might as well mention it here.
I've been theorizing IP Banns not to be too reliable for a couple of reasons.
1. I've always thought that IPs were fixed. However, I don't know if all SPs have the same system or not but it actually is possible that at least some (if not all) IPs will periodically change, so the person you initially IP banned can eventually get back onto their account.
2. I've also just remembered years ago if you have the know-how there actually is a way to change your IP. I've heard this years ago but can't remember exactly what I heard.
3. I don't know how often or not it happens but sometimes more than one person can register an account using the same IP address. I live in a place with separate suites but we technically share Internet so upon registering it does appear to be registered under the same IP address.
However, if somebody who knows more about IPs than I do, feel free to confirm point#1.

| Cronus IP addresses for residential internet customers are not fixed. The "lease" on an IP addresses can be very long as long as the line is active is often continuously renewed but that is not always the case. A change of IP address on a residential ISP account is often as simple as leaving the modem/router completely unplugged for as little as a couple of hours. FWIW I've had the same IP address for 2 years now with my current ISP but could easily get a new one if needed.
Shared networks are something to be mindful of such as the one in your suite when banning an IP address, but the probability of this being an issue is low.

From the perspective of a member, re: IP banning - it's more helpful to have than not, I feel like. If you have someone dedicated enough to being toxic to your community they can overcome that, but at the end of the day most people I've dealt with have understood when they're not wanted and prefer to spend their free time in spaces that are fun and welcoming to them (and the rest tend to get bored eventually).
I've also found having some sort of open line of communication tends to lead to less public fits. For example, if I allow a member I am banning to PM me / send me emails if they have any questions / comments about what's happening, sometimes they'll send me some rude stuff but, in doing that, experience a catharsis and move on, thereby sparing my members from any public drama, which is my main goal.
I think admins have to develop their own style and procedures when attempting to remove ill fits from their community, and while there is no end-all fix, I find IP / account banning pretty effective, especially when paired with the support community and / or sending a ticket.

I agree, and some people just don't have the technical inclination to figure out how to change their IP anyway.
